Wharfedale Evo 5.3 Floorstanding Speakers White (Pair)

Sitting in the middle of the five-strong EVO 5 Series, the Wharfedale EVO 5.3 is a three-way floorstanding speaker that brings technologies from the flagship Elysian and Aura ranges into a more accessible price bracket. Above it sits the larger EVO 5.4 with its 150mm bass drivers; below it, the EVO 5.2 standmount offers the same three-way topology in a compact enclosure. The EVO 5.3 succeeds the well-regarded EVO 4.4, building on its foundation with a larger AMT tweeter, upgraded damping materials, and a redesigned three-way slot-loaded port system.

Air Motion Transformer Tweeter

All EVO 5 models share an improved AMT (Air Motion Transformer) high-frequency driver, developed from Wharfedale’s high-end Elysian project. At 35 × 70mm, the EVO 5 version is physically larger than the 30 × 60mm unit fitted to the EVO 4 series, delivering improved efficiency and wider dispersion. The AMT’s pleated diaphragm works by squeezing and expanding air rather than pushing it like a conventional dome, moving approximately four times the air volume per stroke. This results in lower distortion and faster transient response, allowing fine treble detail to come through cleanly without harshness.

Dedicated Dome Midrange

The EVO 5.3’s three-way configuration includes a dedicated 50mm soft-dome midrange driver, a feature shared with the larger EVO 5.2 standmount and EVO 5.4 floorstander. By isolating the midrange from the demands placed on both the tweeter and bass drivers, vocals and instruments such as guitar and piano are reproduced with greater clarity and tonal accuracy. The dome construction provides a fast, responsive performance across its operating bandwidth.

Twin Kevlar Bass Drivers

Low frequencies are handled by a pair of 130mm black woven Kevlar cone drivers. The twin-driver arrangement keeps the cabinet slim whilst maintaining sufficient radiating area for full-bodied bass output down to 40Hz (–6dB). Kevlar’s inherent stiffness-to-weight ratio provides precise cone control, reducing break-up modes and keeping the bass articulate rather than simply loud.

ResoFrame and Silentweave Damping

New to the EVO 5 Series, ResoFrame is an elastomer damping element fitted to the frame of every drive unit. It absorbs mechanical vibrations at source before they can transfer into the cabinet structure, reducing colouration. Complementing this, Silentweave is a cotton-and-felt hybrid material developed specifically for the EVO 5, fitted inside the driver cavities to absorb internal sound-wave reflections. Together, these technologies help deliver a cleaner, more transparent sound.

Slot-Loaded Profiled Port

The EVO 5.3’s bass-reflex cabinet uses Wharfedale’s SLPP (Slot-Loaded Profiled Port) system, borrowed from the premium Aura and Elysian ranges. Unlike the EVO 4’s two-way slot port, the EVO 5 version fires in three directions — left, right, and rear — distributing the exhausted air more evenly around the speaker. This improves bass integration into the room and reduces the boundary-related ‘boom’ that conventional rear-firing ports can produce, making the EVO 5.3 less fussy about room placement.

Cabinet Design

The 35.4-litre cabinet is constructed from a sandwich of materials chosen to minimise resonance whilst maximising internal volume relative to the speaker’s footprint. A hybrid metal-and-wood plinth provides structural rigidity and accommodates floor spikes for secure, vibration-free placement. The smoothly contoured exterior is available in four finishes: matte black, matte white, matte Lunar Grey, and walnut wood veneer.
