The Wharfedale Denton 85th Anniversary is a two-way bookshelf loudspeaker that celebrates 85 years of one of British audio's most enduring designs. Gilbert Briggs founded Wharfedale in 1932, and the original Denton became one of the brand's most celebrated and widely purchased loudspeakers, balancing fine craftsmanship, natural sound quality, and genuine affordability in a compact cabinet that was bought in its millions around the world. The 85th Anniversary edition reintroduces that beloved formula with a combination of traditional cabinet-making and thoroughly modern acoustic engineering.
Classic Cabinet Construction
The Denton 85th Anniversary is beautifully hand-veneered by Wharfedale's own cabinet makers, wearing a traditional Tungsten cloth grille and featuring an inset front baffle that echoes the styling of the original Denton. The cabinet is a vented-box (bass reflex) design with an internal volume of 13.5 litres, carefully tuned to complement the drive units within. At 340mm tall, 240mm wide, and 287mm deep, it is a genuine bookshelf speaker that will sit comfortably on a shelf or a dedicated stand.
Drive Units and Crossover
Beneath the traditional exterior, the Denton 85th Anniversary employs a woven Kevlar bass/midrange driver measuring 6.5 inches (165mm), mounted on a rigid die-cast chassis. The woven Kevlar cone delivers a rich, detailed bass and midrange output with excellent dynamic performance, combining low coloration with the structural stiffness needed to handle transient peaks cleanly. High frequencies are handled by a 1-inch (25mm) woven textile soft-dome tweeter operating with a high-flux ferrite magnet, designed for smooth, detailed extension throughout the treble range.
These two drive units are united by a crossover network set at 3.1kHz, meticulously developed to create a seamless, near-inaudible transition between the drivers. The result is a coherent, integrated musical presentation that remains natural and engaging across all types of source material.
Performance and Compatibility
The Denton 85th Anniversary has a sensitivity of 88dB (2V at 1m) and a nominal impedance of 4 ohms, with a minimum impedance of 3.8 ohms. It is compatible with amplifiers rated between 20 and 120 watts, and achieves a peak SPL of 95dB. The frequency response extends from 45Hz to 20kHz within plus or minus 3dB, with bass extension reaching down to 40Hz at the minus 6dB point. This breadth of response, combined with its modest power requirements, makes the Denton 85th Anniversary an excellent match for a wide range of integrated amplifiers at any level of the market.
