Wharfedale AURA Technology
The Wharfedale Aura 4 is the flagship model in the AURA range of floorstanding loudspeakers, taking direct inspiration from the award-winning ELYSIAN series in terms of technology, materials, and cabinet finishing. Designed and engineered by Wharfedale in their dedicated UK development facility, the Aura 4 delivers a level of acoustic performance and visual refinement that has previously been associated with speakers at significantly higher price points.
AMT High-Frequency Driver
At the heart of the Aura 4 is Wharfedale's world-famous Air Motion Transformer high-frequency transducer. Unlike a conventional dome tweeter, the AMT does not move forwards and backwards in a piston-like motion. Instead, its folded diaphragm carries conductive elements immersed in a powerful magnetic field, squeezing air out with exceptional efficiency and accuracy. The result is an extraordinarily low-distortion transducer with wide bandwidth, scintillating speed, and outstanding dynamic ability, reproducing the finest high-frequency detail with remarkable clarity.
Woven Glass Fibre Matrix Cones
The Aura 4 employs a 3-way driver configuration: a single 27 x 90 mm AMT tweeter, a 4-inch woven glass fibre matrix midrange driver, and twin 6.5-inch woven glass fibre matrix bass drivers. Developed in direct lineage with the ELYSIAN series, these proprietary cone diaphragms combine low mass with high stiffness, allowing fast transient response and precise dynamic control across the full frequency range. Each driver's voice coil sits within a high-flux magnetic field, with eddy currents and inductance controlled by copper-clad pole pieces for reduced distortion. The die-cast aluminium chassis of each driver is bolted to the cabinet with six high-tensile bolts, maximising rigidity and ensuring accurate transient reproduction.
SLPP Bass Loading
Wharfedale's Slot Loaded Profiled Port bass reflex system, developed from the original idea of company founder Gilbert Briggs, employs a downward-facing port that channels high-pressure, high-velocity airflow more efficiently than a conventional front or rear-firing port. This design reduces port noise, lowers the system's resonant frequency, and delivers deeper, more controlled bass extension. The result is a measured -6 dB bass extension of 26 Hz, providing a genuinely full-range performance in medium to large listening rooms.
AURA Crossover
The crossover network divides the frequency band between the three drive units at 475 Hz and 3.3 kHz, with each component optimised to draw the best from its respective driver. Wharfedale has been among the first domestic speaker manufacturers to apply rigorous engineering discipline to crossover design, using carefully selected high-quality components that are the result of extensive listening and measurement sessions. The crossover unifies the three-way driver complement into a coherent, musically natural whole, ensuring seamless integration across the frequency range.
Cabinet and Finish
The Aura 4 cabinet is built to a standard that reflects the care taken with the acoustic engineering. Available in Hi-Gloss Black, Hi-Gloss White, and natural Walnut wood veneer, each cabinet is lacquered and hand-polished to produce a flawless, furniture-grade finish. The Hi-Gloss Black finish is particularly striking, presenting a refined and contemporary aesthetic that complements both traditional and modern interiors. Concealed beneath the finish are internal bracing structures and carefully profiled internal surfaces designed to minimise standing waves and cabinet colouration.
