Westworld: Season One – The Maze is the acclaimed science-fiction drama series created by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy for HBO, based on Michael Crichton's 1973 film. Set in a sprawling western-themed amusement park populated by lifelike android "Hosts," the series follows what happens when those Hosts begin to break their programming and develop genuine consciousness.
The Story
Season One spans ten episodes and introduces Westworld, a luxury resort where wealthy guests can live out any fantasy they choose without consequence, because the park's residents are not human. As the park's founder, Dr Robert Ford (Anthony Hopkins), pursues a mysterious new narrative called "The Maze," a veteran gunslinger known only as the Man in Black (Ed Harris) searches the park for deeper meaning, and Host Dolores Abernathy (Evan Rachel Wood) begins to question the reality of her scripted existence. Alongside her are fellow Hosts Maeve Millay (Thandiwe Newton) and Teddy Flood (James Marsden), as programmer Bernard Lowe (Jeffrey Wright) works to keep the fragile world in order.
A Landmark 4K Release
This 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray edition presents all ten episodes across three 4K UHD discs, accompanied by three standard Blu-ray discs. The image is encoded in HEVC / H.265 at 2160p with a 1.78:1 aspect ratio, and the release carries both Dolby Vision and HDR10 grading. Audio is presented in English Dolby Atmos with a TrueHD 7.1 core, a particularly well-suited format for Ramin Djawadi's layered, cinematic score.
Special Features
The set includes a collection of behind-the-scenes documentaries covering the creation of Westworld's environments, the design of the main title sequence, the production's approach to artificial intelligence as a narrative theme, and a gag reel. A "Crafting the Narrative" featurette includes commentary from creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy.
