Released on Parlophone as a 20th Anniversary Edition, this double LP collects the soundtrack to the 1996 film adaptation of Irvine Welsh's novel Trainspotting. The original album first appeared on 19 February 1996, drawing together Britpop, rock and the leftfield, techno and ambient electronic music that ran through the film.

The Pressing

This edition spreads fourteen tracks across four sides, pressed on 180g black vinyl and carrying the film's original sleeve artwork. It was issued on 11 November 2016 under catalogue number EMC37391A. Each disc label reproduces a different character portrait from the original campaign, and the sides are indexed A to D.

The Music

Side A opens with Iggy Pop's Lust For Life, then Brian Eno's Deep Blue Day and the ten minute Primal Scream title track. Side B carries Sleeper's reading of Atomic, New Order's Temptation and Iggy Pop's Nightclubbing. Side C gathers Blur's Sing, Lou Reed's Perfect Day, Pulp's Mile End and the Full On Renaissance Mix of Bedrock's For What You Dream Of. Side D closes with Elastica's 2:1, Leftfield's A Final Hit, Underworld's Born Slippy (NUXX) and Damon Albarn's Closet Romantic.

Recognition

The soundtrack is regularly rated among the strongest in film. Entertainment Weekly placed it at number 17 on its 100 Best Movie Soundtracks in 2001, the editors of Vanity Fair ranked it the seventh best motion picture soundtrack in 2007, and Rolling Stone listed it at number 13 in The 25 Greatest Soundtracks of All Time in 2013.
