Originally released in September 1977 on Bearsville Records, Oops! Wrong Planet is the third studio album by Utopia, the rock band led by Todd Rundgren. Recorded at Utopia Sound in Lake Hill, New York, the album marked a decisive shift from the band's progressive rock origins towards a more streamlined, pop-oriented approach. With its emphasis on concise, melodic songwriting, the record showcased the considerable talents of all four members across twelve tightly crafted tracks.
The album features several standout moments, from the driving opener "Trapped" to the emotionally resonant closer "Love Is the Answer" — a track that would later become a number one hit on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart when covered by England Dan & John Ford Coley in 1979. Other highlights include the keyboard-driven "Windows", the collaborative "The Marriage of Heaven and Hell", and the punchy "Abandon City". Oops! Wrong Planet peaked at number 73 on the Billboard 200 and remains an important document of Utopia's evolution into one of the late 1970s' most versatile rock outfits.
