Utopia - Adventures In Utopia LP

Utopia were a progressive rock and pop group formed in New York in 1973 by Todd Rundgren, who led the band through numerous lineup and stylistic changes across more than a decade. By the late 1970s the group had settled into its best-known four-piece configuration: Todd Rundgren on guitar and vocals, Roger Powell on keyboards, Kasim Sulton on bass, and Willie Wilcox on drums. Adventures in Utopia, the band’s fourth studio album, was released in January 1980 on Bearsville Records and marked a deliberate pivot away from their prog-rock roots towards a leaner, more radio-friendly new-wave sound. The gamble paid off commercially: “Set Me Free” became the only US Top 40 single Utopia ever placed, and the album reached No. 32 on the Billboard 200.

About the Album

Recorded and produced by the band themselves, Adventures in Utopia is characterised by tight, hook-driven arrangements, layered synthesisers from Roger Powell, and Rundgren’s polished vocal performances. Where earlier Utopia albums featured extended instrumental passages, this record trades that complexity for concise, punchy songwriting influenced by the emerging new-wave movement. Tracks such as “Caravan” and “Second Nature” demonstrate the band’s ability to marry sophisticated musicianship with accessible pop structures. The album was well received on release and has since gained a devoted following among fans of late-1970s and early-1980s art-pop.

This Pressing

This edition is a Music on Vinyl reissue (catalogue number MOVLP2518C) pressed on 180-gram silver-coloured vinyl. It was produced as a limited edition of 1,000 individually numbered copies, and comes housed in a gatefold sleeve. The heavier vinyl weight is associated with improved rigidity and reduced susceptibility to warping compared with standard pressings.
