The Commitments (Music From The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) is issued on At The Movies, the Music On Vinyl imprint dedicated to film and television music. Alan Parker's 1991 musical comedy drama was adapted from Roddy Doyle's 1987 novel and set on the Northside of Dublin, where Jimmy Rabbitte assembles a group of working class youths into a soul band called The Commitments. The record is credited to the band rather than to a various artists line-up, because all fourteen songs are performed by the film's cast.

The Soundtrack

The album gathers the fourteen songs heard in the film, a set of 1960s soul and R&B standards first cut by Wilson Pickett, Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, Al Green, Ann Peebles, James Carr, Mary Wells and Clarence Carter. Andrew Strong takes most of the lead vocals, with Angeline Ball, Maria Doyle and Bronagh Gallagher on backing vocals throughout; Niamh Kavanagh sings on "Destination Anywhere" and "Do Right Woman, Do Right Man". The band credited on the sleeve is Robert Arkins, Michael Aherne, Angeline Ball, Maria Doyle, Dave Finnegan, Bronagh Gallagher, Felim Gormley, Glen Hansard, Dick Massey, Kenneth McCluskey, Johnny Murphy and Andrew Strong.

Release History

MCA Records issued the soundtrack on 13 August 1991. Produced by Paul Bushnell, Kevin Killen and Alan Parker, it became one of the best selling soundtrack albums of the decade, certified triple platinum by the British Phonographic Industry and double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America, and it won the Brit Award for Best Soundtrack at the 1992 Brit Awards. This Music On Vinyl edition was released in 2016 to mark the album's 25th anniversary.

Pressing and Packaging

A single 180 gram audiophile black vinyl LP, cut at 33 1/3 RPM in stereo and pressed in the EU on the original MCA labels. A 4 page booklet is included and the sleeve ships in a PVC protective outer sleeve.
