The Beatles - Revolver [2022 Mix, Picture Disc] (LP) Vinyl

Revolver is the seventh studio album by The Beatles, first released on Parlophone on 5 August 1966 under the catalogue number PCS 7009. It was the band's last recording project before they retired from live performance, and it marked their most overt use of studio technique to date: automatic double tracking, varispeed, reversed tape, close miking and instruments well outside their touring set up. This edition presents the album on a single 12 inch picture disc, carrying the 2022 stereo mix.

The Album

Recording began at EMI Studio 3 in London on 6 April 1966 with George Martin producing, and the first song attempted was "Tomorrow Never Knows". The fourteen tracks range from the string octet of "Eleanor Rigby" to the Hindustani classical influence of "Love You To" and the tape loop collage of "Tomorrow Never Knows". The album topped the Record Retailer chart in the UK for seven weeks and the Billboard Top LPs list in the United States for six.

Its reputation has only grown. Revolver was ranked first in the 1998 and 2000 editions of Colin Larkin's All Time Top 1000 Albums, third in the 2003 and 2012 editions of Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, and eleventh in the 2020 revision. It was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999, and it has been certified double platinum by the BPI.

This Pressing

On 28 October 2022 a remixed and expanded edition of Revolver was issued, built around a new stereo mix by Giles Martin and Sam Okell that used the de-mixing technology developed by Peter Jackson's WingNut Films to separate the original tape sources. This picture disc is the single LP presentation of that mix, released by Apple Records and Universal Music Group International under catalogue number 0602445599707.

The disc was mastered at Abbey Road Studios and pressed by GZ Media. Its run out grooves carry the same Abbey Road half speed cutting etchings as the standard 2022 LP. Because the artwork is laminated into the vinyl itself rather than printed on a paper label, a picture disc is a collector's format first: it is best treated as a display piece alongside a standard black pressing.

Packaging

The record sits in a die cut sleeve, so the circular artwork on the disc shows through the front. Side one carries Klaus Voormann's cover design, the line drawing and photo collage that won the 1967 Grammy Award for Best Album Cover, Graphic Arts. Side two carries Robert Whitaker's rear sleeve photograph of the band together with the original track listing and credits. The rear of the sleeve reproduces the original Parlophone layout, catalogue number PCS 7009 and the period EMITEX record cleaner advertisement for historical interest only.
