Description

Abbey Road was first issued in the UK on Apple Records on 26 September 1969 under the catalogue number PCS 7088, produced by George Martin. This is the 50th Anniversary single LP edition of 27 September 2019, which follows the anniversary reissues of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and The Beatles (White Album) and presents the record on 180 gram vinyl with a new stereo mix by Giles Martin and Sam Okell.

The Album

Seventeen tracks run across the two sides. Side one opens with "Come Together" and "Something" and closes with "I Want You (She's So Heavy)". Side two begins with "Here Comes The Sun" and "Because", then runs into the long closing sequence of "You Never Give Me Your Money", "Sun King", "Mean Mr. Mustard", "Polythene Pam", "She Came In Through The Bathroom Window", "Golden Slumbers", "Carry That Weight" and "The End". "Her Majesty" follows fourteen seconds after "The End" as an unlisted hidden track and, as on the original pressing, it is not printed on the side two label.

This Pressing

The Anniversary Edition mix was made by Giles Martin and Sam Okell in 2019. The lacquers were cut by Miles Showell at Abbey Road Studios, the runout etchings recording a half speed cut, and the record was pressed on 180 gram vinyl by Optimal Media in Germany. It is issued by Apple Records and Universal Music Group International under catalogue number 0602577915123, which appears on the green Apple labels as 7791512 alongside the 2019 copyright date.

Packaging

The packaging stays faithful to the original album. The front carries Iain Macmillan's photograph of the group on the zebra crossing outside the studio, with no title or artist name printed on it. The rear reproduces the Abbey Road NW8 street sign with the two side listings set out in columns, along with the original credit line: "An E.M.I. recording. Thanks to George Martin, Geoff Emerick and Phillip McDonald. Photographs by Iain Macmillan."
