The Sonos Sub (Gen 3) is Sonos's dedicated wireless subwoofer, designed to add deep, room-filling bass to a Sonos home audio system. It sits above the Sub Mini in the Sonos range, designed for larger rooms and more demanding listening environments, with deeper bass extension. The Gen 3 iteration brings a significant internal upgrade over its predecessor: the processor has moved from a single-core 1 GHz CPU to a quad-core 1.5 GHz CPU, and RAM has doubled from 128 MB to 256 MB, future-proofing the unit for ongoing software development through the Sonos S2 platform.
Driver Design & Acoustic Architecture
The Sub Gen 3 uses two oval, race-track-shaped force-cancelling woofers mounted to face inward towards one another. With both drivers working against each other, the opposing forces cancel out, preventing cabinet resonance and rattle even at high playback levels. Each woofer is driven by its own dedicated Class-D digital amplifier, both tuned to the specific acoustic architecture of the enclosure. A pair of acoustic ports complement the driver arrangement.
Wireless Integration & Connectivity
The Sub connects wirelessly to compatible Sonos amplified products including Sonos Arc, Beam, Era 300, Five, and Amp — no additional speaker cables are required beyond a mains connection. Wi-Fi connectivity supports 802.11a/b/g/n on both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. A 10/100 Mbps Ethernet port is also provided for those who prefer a wired network connection. The unit is compatible exclusively with the Sonos S2 app and will not operate with S1-controlled systems.
Trueplay Tuning & Room Calibration
When paired with a compatible Sonos speaker or component, the system automatically equalises to balance the Sub's output against the paired unit. Trueplay software takes this further by measuring the acoustic characteristics of the room and fine-tuning the crossover points and volume levels of the entire Sonos system accordingly, ensuring controlled and accurate bass reproduction regardless of room geometry or furniture placement.
Placement & Finish
The Sub Gen 3 can be positioned upright on its short edge or laid horizontally on its long face, accommodating different room layouts and furniture arrangements. The gloss finish is available in Black and White.
