Sarah McLachlan's third studio album, Fumbling Towards Ecstasy, was released in October 1993 on Nettwerk Records and proved to be her worldwide breakthrough. Produced by Pierre Marchand at Le Studio in Morin-Heights, Quebec, the record combined atmospheric synth textures with unhurried arrangements and McLachlan's luminous soprano to create one of the defining albums of the early-1990s alternative era. It eventually achieved 3× Platinum certification in the United States and 5× Platinum in Canada, selling well over three million copies worldwide.
The Album
Possession, inspired by the disturbing letters of a stalker, became the album's defining single, while Hold On addressed the AIDS crisis with unflinching compassion. Ice Cream and Good Enough offered lighter counterpoints, and the closing title track unfolds across nearly ten minutes into something genuinely cathartic. This pressing includes a bonus track — a spare cover of Joni Mitchell's Blue — that fits the album's mood with quiet perfection.
