The R1 Mk4 is the fourth generation of Ruark’s compact personal radio, the entry point to the R Series lineup. First launched in 2006 and described at the time as “the Aston Martin of DAB radios,” the R1 has been refined over four generations while retaining its distinctive form factor. It sits below the R1S Smart Radio, which adds Wi-Fi, internet radio, and streaming service integration; the R1 Mk4 focuses on DAB/FM broadcast reception and Bluetooth wireless streaming without network connectivity. This model is finished in Espresso lacquer.
Driver and Amplification
The R1 Mk4 uses a single 75mm Ruark NS+ (NaturalSound+) full-range driver powered by a 9W Class A/B amplifier. Class A/B topology is typically found in higher-end hi-fi equipment and delivers lower distortion than the Class D amplifiers common in compact radios. Adaptive EQ adjusts tonal balance relative to volume level, compensating for the ear’s reduced sensitivity to bass at lower listening levels.
Display and Controls
A high-contrast OLED display with auto-dimming shows station name, time, and playback information, adjusting brightness automatically to ambient light levels via the built-in light sensor. The RotoDial — Ruark’s combined rotary volume control and menu navigator — sits on top of the unit, flanked by dedicated source, preset, menu, and alarm buttons. A remote control is included.
Radio and Bluetooth
DAB, DAB+, and multiregional FM with RDS are supported via a detachable telescopic aerial. Bluetooth V4.2 with SBC, AAC, BLE, and A2DP profiles provides wireless audio streaming from smartphones, tablets, and computers. The R1 Mk4 automatically reconnects to the last paired device on power-up.
Inputs, Outputs, and USB
A 3.5mm stereo line input (maximum 1.4Vrms) accommodates external analogue sources. A 3.5mm headphone output (6Ω) is provided, with speaker and headphone volumes adjusted separately. The USB-C 2.0 port serves dual purpose: 5V/1A device charging and audio playback supporting MP3 and AAC (up to 48kHz/320kbps), FLAC and WAV (up to 24-bit/96kHz), and WMA (up to 44.1kHz/320kbps).
Additional Features
A real-time clock with internal battery backup maintains time when mains power is disconnected. Dual alarms with sleep and snooze functions are built in. A Kensington-compatible security slot is provided on the rear panel. An optional BackPack battery accessory provides up to 12 hours of portable operation.
