The QED Reference Analogue XLR 40 sits at the heart of QED’s Audio 40 interconnect range, positioned above the Performance Audio Graphite and below the flagship Signature Audio 40. It is the only balanced XLR analogue interconnect in the Audio 40 family, offering a dedicated solution for systems with balanced inputs and outputs.
Tri-Conductor Technology
The cable employs QED’s Tri-Conductor design, where a third 99.999% silver plated oxygen-free copper conductor is integrally twisted alongside the signal pair to carry ground return currents. This arrangement reduces signal-to-ground capacitance to extremely low levels and improves common mode rejection of mains hum, a particular advantage in longer cable runs between balanced components.
Low Capacitance Construction
QED identifies cable capacitance as a major factor affecting high-fidelity signal transmission. The Reference XLR 40 uses foamed polyethylene as its dielectric, chosen for the air content within its structure which reduces the energy lost to dielectric absorption. The measured parallel capacitance of 35 pF is exceptionally low for an analogue interconnect of this type.
Ferrite Noise Absorption
A unique floating zinc/manganese (Zn/Mn) impregnated ferrite jacket surrounds the cable assembly. This jacket absorbs high-frequency noise signal components that fall outside the audio band, improving signal micro-timing and clarity without affecting the wanted audio frequencies.
Shielding and Screening
The outer shield braid is constructed from 99.999% oxygen-free copper, providing 100% electrostatic screening. The electrostatic screen is connected at the source end only, preventing ground loops that can introduce hum in balanced audio systems.
Neutrik XLR Connectors
Each cable is terminated with gold plated Neutrik XX-14 Nickel Series XLR connectors. These professional-grade connectors feature low contact resistance and additional ground spring contacts for shell continuity, ensuring a secure and consistent connection.
