The QED Classic 42 Strand is the cable that started it all — launched in 1975 as QED’s first ever speaker cable and still in the range today. Sitting at the entry point of QED’s Classic series, below the 79 Strand and the Performance XT25, it is designed for short-to-medium cable runs in everyday hi-fi and home cinema systems where a compact, flexible cable is needed.
Construction
The cable uses 42 strands of oxygen-free copper in a figure-of-8 construction, giving it a cross-sectional area of 0.75 mm² (19 AWG). The figure-of-8 profile keeps the overall jacket diameter to just 2.7 mm, making it easy to route along skirting boards, through trunking, or behind furniture without drawing attention. It is compatible with QED’s ABS, Metal, and Mini Airloc banana plug and spade connectors for a secure, tool-free termination.
Electrical Performance
Loop resistance is 0.046 Ω/m, capacitance 49 pF/m, and inductance 0.75 µH/m. The dissipation factor of 0.0500 reflects the straightforward PVC insulation — adequate for the short runs this cable is intended for. For longer distances or more demanding systems, QED’s 79 Strand (2.50 mm², 0.016 Ω/m loop resistance) offers a step up in conductor area and correspondingly lower resistance.
This Product
This listing is for a full 100-metre reel of the Classic 42 Strand in black, supplied unterminated. The reel format is suited to installers and trade customers who cut and terminate to length on site. For smaller quantities, the Classic 42 Strand is also available by the metre.
