The Q Acoustics QI65LCRF is a fire and acoustic hood designed specifically for the QI65LCR in-ceiling speaker. A legal requirement in many new-build properties, fire hoods maintain the integrity of ceiling fire ratings where speakers are installed, ensuring compliance with UK Building Regulations Part B (Fire Safety) and Part E (Sound Insulation). Tested at the UK Building Test Centre, the QI65LCRF preserves either a 30-minute or 60-minute fire rating depending on the ceiling construction.
Fire Protection
The hood is constructed from woven glass fabric with a thickness of 0.40mm and a weight of 430 g/m², finished with a starch weave lock. This fire-resistant material has a flash ignition point of 315–370°C and an auto-ignition point of 370–427°C, with stable operation across a wide temperature range of −40°C to +120°C. The warp count of 1360 d’tex provides the structural integrity needed to maintain the ceiling’s fire barrier around the speaker cut-out.
Acoustic Isolation
Beyond fire protection, the QI65LCRF also acts as an acoustic barrier, reducing rear sound transmission by approximately 10dB in mid-to-high frequencies. This is particularly useful in multi-storey properties, flats, and HMOs where sound bleed between floors needs to be minimised. The internal sponge lining absorbs rear-radiated energy from the speaker driver, preventing it from transmitting through the ceiling void into adjacent rooms.
Installation
The QI65LCRF fits directly over the rear of the QI65LCR in-ceiling speaker once it is mounted in the ceiling. The hood’s 270 × 540mm footprint with a depth of 110mm accommodates the speaker’s backbox requirements while leaving sufficient clearance for cable routing and ventilation.
