Q Acoustics 5040 Floorstanding Speakers Satin White (Pair)

The Q Acoustics 5040 sits at the heart of the 5000 series — Q Acoustics' flagship passive speaker range. Positioned above the entry-level 3000i series and below the high-end Concept line, the 5040 is a two-way floorstanding design that pairs two 125mm (5.0in) bass drivers with a single 25mm (1.0in) tweeter in a slim, room-friendly cabinet standing just under a metre tall.

Cabinet Engineering

The 5040 draws heavily on Q Acoustics' research into cabinet-induced colouration. The enclosure uses P2P (Point-to-Point) internal bracing — a technique that ties opposing cabinet panels together at strategic points to increase stiffness and shift resonant frequencies out of the audible range. Combined with the HPE (Helmholtz Pressure Equaliser) — a tuned internal chamber that absorbs and dissipates standing-wave energy inside the cabinet — the result is a noticeably cleaner midband with less box-related smearing than conventional floorstanders at this price point.

Driver Design

The mid/bass drivers use Q Acoustics' C3 (Continuous Curved Cone) profile. The curved geometry progressively changes the cone's stiffness from the centre to the surround, improving the transition to the tweeter by controlling breakup modes more effectively than a standard straight-sided cone. The tweeter is hermetically sealed and mechanically isolated from the cabinet, reducing the transmission of vibration from the enclosure into the treble unit.

Performance

With a sensitivity of 91.5dB (2.83V at 1m) and a nominal impedance of 6 ohms (minimum 3.0 ohms), the 5040 is reasonably easy to drive — Q Acoustics recommend amplifier power between 25W and 150W. Frequency response extends from 39Hz to 30kHz (-6dB), offering genuine bass depth without requiring a subwoofer for most music and film applications. The crossover point sits at 2.5kHz.

Build and Finish

The front baffle features a black acrylic trim with a butyl rubber damping layer beneath, adding mass and further reducing resonance at the critical point where drivers are mounted. The 5040 is available in four finishes: Satin Black, Satin White, Santos Rosewood, and Holme Oak. Each speaker weighs 18.0kg and encloses an effective internal volume of 27 litres.
