The Q Acoustics 5020 is a 2-way bookshelf speaker from the 5000 series, sitting between the compact 5010 and the floorstanding 5040. It brings technology originally developed for Q Acoustics’ flagship Concept range to a more accessible price point, centred on the C3 Continuous Curved Cone™ mid/bass driver and a hermetically sealed, mechanically decoupled tweeter.
C3 Continuous Curved Cone™ Driver
At the heart of the 5020 is a 125 mm mid/bass driver built around the C3 Continuous Curved Cone™ profile. Rather than using a conventional straight or flared cone, Q Acoustics engineered a single, smooth, continuous curve that combines the bass extension benefits of a straight conic profile with the controlled midrange dispersion of a flared geometry. The result is improved frequency response, reduced harmonic distortion, and smoother integration with the tweeter across the crossover region.
The cone’s geometry demands strong motor force for optimal excursion control. Substantial magnets are coupled to large voice coils, delivering a 50% increase in power handling compared to a conventional driver using a 25.4 mm voice coil. This translates directly into improved dynamic range, particularly in the bass region, and allows the 5020 to play with authority beyond what its compact cabinet might suggest.
Hermetically Sealed Tweeter
The 25 mm high-frequency driver is derived from the design used in the latest Concept series. It is hermetically sealed within its own chamber and mechanically isolated (floating) from the baffle. This isolation prevents internal pressure modulations from the cabinet and adjacent mid/bass driver from reaching the tweeter diaphragm, reducing colouration and distortion. The inner chamber is carefully vented for lower distortion, and the crossover point has been lowered to ensure seamless integration through the critical midrange-to-treble transition.
Cabinet Construction
The 5020’s cabinet employs Point-to-Point (P2P) internal bracing to stiffen the enclosure and reduce panel resonance. The baffle is laminated with a layer of butyl rubber beneath a black acrylic trim panel, providing both vibration damping and a visually clean front presentation free from visible fixings. The bass reflex port is rear-firing, and the effective internal volume is 6.8 litres.
Design
The 5000 series shares its minimalist design language with the Concept range, featuring smooth, curved cabinet edges and a contemporary aesthetic. The magnetic grilles attach without visible mounting points, maintaining clean lines whether the grilles are fitted or removed. Four finishes are available across the range, each with the signature black acrylic baffle trim.
