Description
The Pro-Ject Debut Carbon EVO Satin Black sits in the middle of Pro-Ject's Debut range, above the entry-level Debut III and below the flagship Debut PRO. It is a refined evolution of the long-running Debut Carbon, with every significant aspect improved, from the motor suspension to the platter damping and the height-adjustable feet.
Build and isolation
A heavy MDF plinth is hand-finished in satin black. Three height-adjustable heavy-duty metal feet replace the previous four plastic feet, allowing precise levelling on most surfaces and improving stability on uneven shelves. A redesigned motor suspension uses more advanced TPE damping to reduce vibration transmission to the plinth, improving signal-to-noise performance and retrieving finer detail from the groove.
Platter and drive
A 1.7 kg steel platter incorporates a TPE (thermoplastic elastomer) damping ring bonded to the inside of the rim. The TPE damps the resonance that metal platters are prone to, and the additional mass creates a flywheel effect that stabilises rotation. Electronic speed control selects between 33 and 45 RPM via a rocker switch under the plinth, preserving the clean top surface. With the supplied 78 RPM round belt and a separate stylus, the turntable can also play shellac records.
Tonearm
The signature 8.6 inch one-piece carbon tonearm uses an integrated headshell to eliminate joint resonances. Carbon fibre offers high stiffness with low mass, an unusual combination at this price, which is well suited to the included moving-magnet cartridge.
Cartridge
An Ortofon 2M Red moving-magnet cartridge is pre-fitted and pre-aligned at the factory. The 2M Red is a well-regarded entry-level MM cartridge with an elliptical stylus, providing an open, dynamic presentation. The stylus is user-replaceable as it wears.
Connections
Rear-mounted gold-plated RCA output sockets allow the phono cable to be upgraded. Pro-Ject's Connect it E semi-balanced, low-capacitance RCA phono cable with ground wire is supplied as standard, designed to minimise interference on the sensitive cartridge signal. A 15 V DC universal mains adaptor, dust cover, 78 RPM belt, and 7 inch single adapter are included in the box.
