The Polk Audio Signature S50e sits within the Signature Series as the compact floorstanding tower, positioned between the smaller S50 bookshelf speakers and the larger S55 and S60 floorstanders. Designed as an update to the original Signature S50, the S50e introduces refined crossover components, improved bass tuning, and updated driver performance while retaining the same fundamental acoustic architecture.
Driver Array & Crossover
The S50e employs a 2.5-way driver array comprising two 5.25-inch (13.34cm) mid/bass drivers with mica-reinforced polypropylene cones and a 1-inch (2.54cm) Terylene dome tweeter certified for Hi-Res Audio reproduction, extending to 40kHz and beyond. The mica reinforcement in the polypropylene cones increases stiffness without adding significant mass, reducing cone breakup and distortion at higher output levels. The tweeter’s Terylene dome material was selected by Polk for its combination of lightness and internal damping properties.
The 2.5-way cascaded crossover hands off duties at 2.5kHz, allowing the two mid/bass drivers to share the workload at lower frequencies while one transitions out of the passband earlier to maintain midrange clarity. Precision crossover components and updated topology in the S50e improve imaging and off-axis response over the original S50 design.
Power Port Bass Enhancement
The S50e features Polk’s patented Power Port technology — a downward-firing bass port that uses a cone-shaped diffuser to smooth airflow as it exits the cabinet. By directing bass energy toward the floor and outward, the Power Port design reduces port turbulence and chuffing that can occur with conventional rear-firing or front-firing ports. Polk states this approach delivers up to 3dB more bass output compared to a traditional port design.
Cabinet Construction
The enclosure is built from critically damped Medite MDF with laser-optimised internal bracing to reduce standing waves and cabinet resonance. The curved top edges soften the visual profile while also serving an acoustic purpose, minimising diffraction effects around the cabinet edges. An anti-diffraction magnetic grille attaches without visible fixings to preserve the clean front baffle.
Connectivity & Compatibility
Dual gold-plated 5-way binding posts on the rear panel support bi-wiring or bi-amping configurations. The S50e is compatible with both 4-ohm and 8-ohm amplifier outputs and is rated for amplifiers delivering between 20 and 150 watts per channel. With a sensitivity of 89dB (1W/1m), the S50e is efficient enough to perform well with modest amplification while having the headroom to handle more powerful systems.
