The Polk Audio Signature Elite ES20 sits in the middle of the Signature Elite range, positioned above the compact ES15 bookshelf and below the ES50 and ES60 floorstanders. It shares the same driver technologies and cabinet engineering as the rest of the series, making it a natural choice for both dedicated stereo listening and integration into a Signature Elite home cinema system alongside the ES35 centre channel and ES55 Dolby Atmos modules.
Driver Technology
The ES20 uses a 25mm (1-inch) Terylene dome tweeter mounted in a precision waveguide. Terylene is a woven polyester fabric chosen for its combination of low mass and controlled internal damping, which allows the tweeter to extend past 40 kHz — meeting Hi-Res Audio certification requirements. The tweeter motor structure uses a ceramic magnet assembly designed to minimise distortion at high output levels.
The 165mm (6.5-inch) mid/bass driver uses a Dynamic Balance mica-reinforced polypropylene cone. Polk’s Dynamic Balance process involves laser-mapping the cone and surround to identify resonant modes, then tuning the geometry and material composition to push those modes outside the driver’s operating passband. The result is a cleaner midrange with less coloration from cone breakup.
PowerPort Bass Enhancement
Rather than a conventional rear-firing bass reflex port, the ES20 uses Polk’s proprietary PowerPort technology. A flared port exit on the rear panel directs airflow smoothly outward, reducing port turbulence and the associated chuffing noise at high excursion levels. This allows the cabinet to be placed closer to a rear wall without the bass boom that conventional ports can produce in boundary-loaded positions. The rated low-frequency extension reaches 41 Hz.
Cabinet Construction
The enclosure is built from critically damped Medite MDF, a medium-density fibreboard chosen for its acoustic inertness. Internal bracing reduces cabinet panel resonances, keeping the sound focused on the drivers rather than the enclosure. The rounded baffle edges minimise diffraction effects that can smear the stereo image. Removable magnetic grilles are included.
Connections and Compatibility
A single pair of gold-plated five-way binding posts accepts bare wire, spade connectors, banana plugs, or pin connectors. The ES20 is rated for amplifiers delivering between 20 and 125 watts per channel and is compatible with both 4-ohm and 8-ohm amplifier outputs, making it straightforward to integrate with a wide range of stereo amplifiers and AV receivers.
System Integration
The Signature Elite series is designed as a complete system. The ES20 pairs with the ES35 centre channel for dialogue clarity, the ES15 for compact surround duties, and the ES50 or ES60 floorstanders for front channels in larger rooms. Adding the ES55 height modules enables Dolby Atmos and DTS:X immersive audio configurations.
