The Ortofon Super OM 5E sits at the top of Ortofon's OM 5 Series of moving magnet cartridges, alongside the OM 5S and OM 5E. The OM 5 Series is the lowest-mass range of moving magnet cartridges Ortofon offers, designed for easy mounting and alignment on both top mount and bottom mount headshells. The Super OM 5E differentiates itself from the standard OM 5E by employing the same split pole pin generator technology used in Ortofon's higher-tier 2M series.
Split Pole Pin Engine
The improved generator system inside the Super OM 5E uses split pole pins to reduce eddy current losses caused by magnetic hysteresis. The result is an extended, flat frequency response across the audible band, similar to what is typically associated with a moving coil cartridge. Compared with the standard OM 5E, the Super OM 5E reports tighter channel balance (1.5 dB at 1 kHz versus 2 dB) and a frequency range extended to 25 kHz at −3 dB.
Elliptical Diamond Stylus
The Super OM 5E ships with the Stylus 5E, an elliptical diamond stylus with a tip radius of 8/18 µm. Elliptical diamonds follow the groove oscillations more accurately than spherical diamonds due to their contoured shape, improving tracking and reducing distortion. Tracking force range is 1.5 to 2.0 g, with 1.75 g recommended.
Lightweight Noryl Body
The OM 5 body is moulded from Noryl, a glass-loaded plastic compound chosen for its rigidity and resistance to resonances. A small removable weight-plate sits in the top of the mounting bracket: leave it in place for a standard tonearm, or remove it to drop cartridge mass to 2.5 g for low-mass tonearms.
Stylus Upgrade Path
All OM Series styli are interchangeable with the Super OM 5E body. Replacement and upgrade options include the Stylus 5E, Stylus 10, Stylus 20, Stylus 30, Stylus 40 and the 78 RPM Stylus 78, providing a clear path to better tracing geometries without replacing the cartridge.
