The Ortofon Stylus 540 MK II is the top-tier replacement stylus in the Danish brand's 500 Series of OEM cartridges. It uses a nude FG70 (Fine Groove 70) diamond profile, the same advanced contact geometry employed in the parent 540 MK II cartridge, allowing it to retrieve fine groove detail and high-frequency information that simpler conical and elliptical styli cannot reach.
Compatibility
This stylus fits all cartridges in the Ortofon 500 Series. It is recommended for the 540 MK II, 540 and 540 P, and is mechanically compatible with the 510, 510 MK II, 520, 520 MK II, 530 and 530 MK II cartridge bodies, since every cartridge in the 500 range shares the same stylus mount. The Ortofon Alpha cartridge fitted to certain Pro-Ject turntables uses the same fitting and can also be upgraded to the 540 MK II stylus.
Fitting a 540 MK II stylus to a lower-tier 500 Series body is a recognised upgrade path, lifting the cartridge's tracing capability without the cost of a new cartridge.
Stylus Profile
The nude FG70 diamond is mounted directly on the cantilever rather than being bonded to a metal shank, reducing tip mass and improving transient response. Combined with the recommended 1.5 g tracking force, the stylus tracks demanding passages cleanly while remaining gentle on the record surface.
Setup
The 540 MK II is supplied as a replacement stylus only; it requires an existing Ortofon 500 Series or Alpha cartridge body. The stylus clips onto the front of the cartridge and can be swapped without removing the cartridge from the headshell.
