The Ortofon Quintet Blue is the second step in Ortofon's MC Quintet series, sitting above the entry-level Quintet Red and below the Quintet Bronze. The series offers a consistent body format across all models — a squared-off polycarbonate housing with captive mounting threads that simplifies cartridge alignment considerably — while differentiating models by stylus profile, cantilever material, and coil construction. The Blue addresses listeners ready to move from moving magnet performance into the greater resolution and lower moving mass that the moving coil format offers, but at a price that remains accessible.

At the heart of the Quintet Blue is a Nude Elliptical diamond — a stylus cut from a solid diamond crystal rather than a bonded chip — mounted on an aluminium cantilever. The elliptical profile (tip radii r/R 8/18 µm) tracks groove modulations with more precision than a conical stylus, recovering finer detail from both inner and outer groove radii. The nude construction improves the stylus mass and therefore its ability to follow high-frequency groove modulations accurately. The Quintet Black S at the top of the range uses a Nude Shibata tip with a sapphire cantilever, but the Blue's elliptical diamond represents a meaningfully capable performer in its own right.

Coil and Output

The Quintet Blue's generator coils are wound in pure 4-nines (99.99%) silver wire, which Ortofon specifies for this model. The output voltage is 0.5 mV measured at 1 kHz, 5 cm/sec — a figure typical of low-output moving coil cartridges. This requires either a dedicated MC phono stage or a moving magnet stage supplemented by a separate step-up transformer; standard MM phono inputs are not suitable. The DC resistance of the coil is 7 Ohm, and Ortofon specifies a recommended load impedance of greater than 20 Ohm, making the Quintet Blue relatively tolerant of varying phono stage input impedances compared to some lower-output MC designs. The Quintet Blue's recommended tracking force is 2.3 g, with an acceptable range of 2.1 to 2.5 g. Dynamic lateral compliance is 15 µm/mN and tracking angle is 20 degrees. Tracking ability at 315 Hz reaches 70 µm — a figure that reflects the cartridge's ability to handle demanding musical passages without losing groove contact. The cartridge weighs 9 g and the squared-off body uses captive threaded mounting holes, fitted using the supplied 5 mm or 7 mm screws depending on headshell thickness.

Position in the Quintet Range

Within the Quintet series, the Blue offers smoother reproduction than the Red below it, while the Bronze above it delivers greater dynamic strength. The Black S at the top of the range introduces a more complex stylus geometry.
