Ortofon 2M Silver Replacement Stylus

The Ortofon 2M Silver sits between the entry-level 2M Red and the mid-range 2M Blue in Ortofon's renowned 2M moving magnet cartridge series. Originally developed as an OEM cartridge for select Pro-Ject turntables, the 2M Silver distinguishes itself from the standard 2M Red through the use of silver-plated copper coils — the same coil wire material found in the higher-tier 2M Bronze and 2M Black models — combined with a special rubber suspension engineered for improved tracking and detail retrieval.

Stylus Design & Construction

This replacement stylus features an elliptical diamond tip with an r/R radius of 8/18 µm, delivering a good balance between tracking accuracy and record wear. The equivalent stylus tip mass is just 0.5 mg, contributing to a recommended tracking force of 1.8 g (18 mN) within a permissible range of 1.6–2.0 g. The dynamic lateral compliance of 20 µm/mN ensures compatibility with a wide range of tonearms.

Silver-Plated Copper Coils

Where the standard 2M Red uses copper coils, the 2M Silver upgrades to silver-plated copper wire with a reduced number of windings. Silver plating improves electrical conductivity, which Ortofon employs in its higher-end 2M Bronze and 2M Black cartridges for the same reason. The result is a cleaner signal path from the generator system, delivering 4.0 mV output at 1 kHz (5 cm/sec).

Interchangeable 2M Stylus System

All styli in the Ortofon 2M series share a common mounting system, making this replacement stylus a straightforward swap for any 2M-bodied cartridge. The 2M Silver stylus is directly interchangeable with the 2M Red and 2M Blue cartridge bodies, offering an accessible upgrade path without replacing the entire cartridge. With proper care, Ortofon rates the stylus for up to 1,000 hours of use before performance begins to degrade.
