Ortofon 2M Red Replacement Stylus

The Ortofon Stylus 2M Red is the replacement stylus for the 2M Red moving magnet cartridge, one of the most popular entry-level cartridges in Ortofon's range. Sitting at the entry point of the 2M series, the Red uses a tipped elliptical diamond mounted on an aluminium tube cantilever, delivering an output voltage of 5.5 mV and a frequency response of 20–22,000 Hz.

Stylus Design

The tipped elliptical diamond profile offers a meaningful step up from basic conical styli by tracing a narrower contact area within the record groove. This allows the stylus to read more of the high-frequency information encoded in the groove wall, resulting in greater detail retrieval and improved channel separation (22 dB at 1 kHz). The aluminium tube cantilever provides a rigid yet lightweight connection between the diamond tip and the generator assembly.

Interchangeability Across the 2M Range

All styli within the 2M series are physically interchangeable with any 2M cartridge body. The Stylus 2M Red is designed to work with the 2M Red and 2M Silver cartridge bodies. Installing the Red stylus on a higher-tier body (Bronze or Black) will function mechanically but represents a performance downgrade, while fitting a superior stylus to a Red body yields audible improvements without unlocking the full potential of the premium generator.

Tracking and Setup

Ortofon recommends a tracking force of 1.8 g, with an acceptable range of 1.6–2.0 g. The stylus has a tracking angle of 20° and a dynamic lateral compliance of 20 µm, making it compatible with a wide range of medium-mass tonearms commonly found on turntables at this price point. Recommended electrical loading is 47,000 Ω with 150–300 pF capacitance, which is the standard MM phono input specification.
