The Ortofon Stylus 2M Blue is the original replacement stylus for the Ortofon 2M Blue moving magnet cartridge. Sitting second in the four-tier 2M series hierarchy — above the Red and below the Bronze and Black — the Blue stylus upgrades tracking precision with a nude elliptical diamond, delivering noticeably more dynamics, resolution, and openness than the entry-level 2M Red.
Nude Elliptical Diamond
The 2M Blue stylus uses a nude elliptical diamond — a whole diamond bonded directly to the cantilever rather than a diamond tip mounted on a metal shank. The elliptical profile makes wider contact with the record groove than the bonded elliptical used in the 2M Red, allowing it to retrieve finer detail while reducing record wear. The diamond is mounted on an aluminium tube cantilever for a balanced combination of rigidity and low mass.
2M Series Interchangeability
All four 2M styli — Red, Blue, Bronze, and Black — are physically interchangeable across 2M cartridge bodies. Fitting a Blue stylus to a 2M Red body provides an immediate uplift in detail and resolution. Ortofon notes, however, that the 2M Bronze and Black use a superior cartridge body to the Red and Blue, so while the stylus upgrade will always improve performance, the full potential of each stylus is realised on its matching body.
Fitting
The stylus clips directly onto any 2M series cartridge body without tools. No adjustment to tracking force, anti-skate, or cartridge alignment is required when replacing a worn stylus with the same model. If upgrading from a different 2M stylus tier, Ortofon recommends setting the tracking force to 1.8 g (the recommended value for the Blue) and adjusting anti-skate accordingly.
