The W380-IDC sits within Monitor Audio's Core series — the brand's dedicated architectural custom installation range, designed for permanent in-wall mounting where performance must not be compromised by discretion. The Core series replaced the earlier in-wall lineup in 2017 and spans six in-wall models alongside ceiling and LCR variants, with the W380-IDC representing the range's flagship three-way in-wall design.
Three-Way Driver Architecture
The W380-IDC employs a genuine three-way driver configuration with dedicated bass, midrange, and treble transducers. The 8-inch C-CAM RST bass driver handles low frequencies, using Monitor Audio's Rigid Surface Technology cone profile to suppress breakup modes and extend clean output. Above this, a 4-inch C-CAM RST inverted midrange driver covers the critical vocal and presence frequencies, while a 1-inch C-CAM Gold Dome tweeter extends high-frequency response out to 30 kHz. All three drivers use Monitor Audio's proprietary C-CAM (Ceramic-Coated Aluminium/Magnesium) cone material, a common thread running through the brand's speaker ranges.
Pivoting IDC Module
The midrange driver and tweeter are housed together in a pivoting IDC (Inline Dipole Configuration) module that can be angled up to 18 degrees in all directions. This allows the midrange and treble output to be aimed directly at the primary listening position even when the speaker is mounted off-axis — a common challenge in custom installation where speaker placement is dictated by wall construction rather than ideal acoustic geometry. The IDC module also enables the W380-IDC to serve as a left, centre, or right channel speaker in a home cinema system, providing full LCR flexibility from a single in-wall chassis.
Room Tuning Controls
Three on-board adjustment controls allow the W380-IDC to be tuned to its installation environment. High-frequency and mid-frequency level controls each offer ±3 dB of adjustment, allowing the tonal balance to be trimmed for rooms with hard reflective surfaces or heavy soft furnishing. A boundary compensation control addresses the bass reinforcement that occurs when the speaker is mounted close to a corner or between two walls.
Installation
The W380-IDC uses Monitor Audio's Tri-Grip fixing system, which provides three times the surface area and a more secure surface seal than conventional clamping mechanisms. The speaker is designed for flush mounting into standard stud walls. A magnetic, removable steel grille is included, finished in a neutral off-white that can be painted to match any interior colour scheme.
