The W280 is an 8-inch two-way in-wall loudspeaker from Monitor Audio’s Core range, designed for custom installation in both home cinema and stereo music systems. It sits alongside the smaller W265 and the three-way W280-IDC in the Core in-wall lineup, offering a larger bass driver for deeper low-frequency extension from a flush-mount position.
Driver Technology
The W280 pairs an 8-inch C-CAM (Ceramic-Coated Aluminium/Magnesium) cone bass driver with a 1-inch C-CAM Gold Dome tweeter. The Gold Dome tweeter is anodised with a layer of gold, extending high-frequency response to 30 kHz. The tweeter pod pivots, allowing it to be aimed toward the primary listening position for improved imaging and off-axis performance.
Room Tuning Controls
Built-in switches provide high-frequency level adjustment at three positions (+3 dB, 0 dB, and −3 dB), allowing the tonal balance to be tailored to the room’s acoustics and listener preference. A separate boundary compensation switch (on/off) reduces low-frequency reinforcement when the speaker is mounted close to a corner or adjacent wall, preventing bass from becoming boomy in constrained installations.
Installation
The W280 uses a mineral-filled ABS frame with Monitor Audio’s Tri-Grip dog fixing system, which provides six clamping points for a secure, rattle-free fit against the plasterboard. The cut-out required measures 387 × 234 mm, with a mounting depth of 100 mm. A paintable magnetic grille is included, allowing the speaker to blend seamlessly with any wall finish. Optional WB8 pre-construction brackets and WCBOX-L back boxes are available for new-build installations where the wall cavity needs to be defined before plastering.
