The W280-IDC is part of Monitor Audio's Core series of architectural speakers, designed for permanent installation within walls. As a 3-way design, it sits above the 2-way W280 in the range, adding a dedicated midrange driver for improved vocal clarity and sound localisation — making it suitable for use as a left, centre, or right channel in a home cinema system.
IDC Module & Driver Complement
At the heart of the W280-IDC is a pivoting IDC (Inertially Damped Cabinet) module, which houses a 4-inch C-CAM RST inverted midrange driver and a 1-inch C-CAM Gold Dome tweeter. The IDC module can be aimed towards the primary listening position, directing the critical midrange and high-frequency energy where it is needed most. The dedicated midrange driver delivers richer detail and greater vocal intelligibility compared to a conventional 2-way in-wall design.
Low-frequency duties are handled by an 8-inch (203mm) C-CAM cone bass driver, providing extended bass response down to 45 Hz and a maximum sound pressure level of 111.6 dBA.
Installation
The W280-IDC uses Monitor Audio's Tri-Grip fixing system, which provides three times the surface area of conventional clamping mechanisms. This improves the seal between the speaker and the wall, maximising bass response and reducing vibration transfer. The grille is finished in neutral off-white but can be painted to match the surrounding wall for a fully discreet installation.
