The Monitor Audio Silver AMS 8G is the Dolby Atmos height speaker in the eighth-generation Silver Series, a seven-model range that also comprises the Silver 500 8G, Silver 300 8G, Silver 100 8G, Silver 50 8G, Silver On-Wall 8G and Silver Centre 8G. The AMS 8G is purpose-built to add a convincing overhead layer to a Silver-based home cinema system. It is supplied as a pair, finished here in European Walnut.
Driver Technology
The AMS 8G is a two-way design built around a single 5.25-inch C-CAM mid-bass driver using Monitor Audio’s RST III cone geometry. C-CAM (Ceramic-Coated Aluminium/Magnesium) is the company’s long-standing cone material, and for the eighth generation the driver and motor system have been re-engineered to deliver greater transparency and control through the critical vocal range, with the updated cone geometry increasing rigidity and reducing colouration. A newly developed progressive spider, an upgraded voice coil and an improved venting system provide enhanced linearity, airflow and power handling.
Tweeter and Waveguide
High frequencies are handled by a 25mm C-CAM Gold Dome tweeter with an optimised waveguide. For the 8G generation the tweeter uses a vented design and revised internal enclosure geometry to reduce distortion and improve airflow, together with an updated compression ring geometry and a new ring neodymium magnet for increased magnetic efficiency. Combined with the latest UD Waveguide II, it is designed to hold a stable, consistent performance across all listening levels. The crossover between the two drivers sits at 2.8kHz, and the Silver Series 8G crossover design uses carefully selected capacitors, inductors and resistors for more precise signal division and minimal colouration.
Cabinet Construction
The AMS 8G uses a sealed enclosure rather than a ported one, which suits its role as a height channel and keeps the cabinet compact at 185 x 185 x 312mm. Rigid internal bracing and damping reduce resonance and panel vibration, while Through-Bolt Driver technology braces the C-CAM drive unit to the rear of the cabinet and tightens it to a specific torque, removing unwanted chassis resonances and strengthening overall cabinet rigidity. Each speaker weighs 4.5kg and is supplied with a magnetic grille.
Placement and System Integration
The AMS 8G is designed to sit on top of the Silver 50 8G or Silver 300 8G, firing upward so that Dolby Atmos height effects reflect off the ceiling and reach the listening position without the need for dedicated in-ceiling speakers. In-room frequency response is quoted at 82Hz to 35kHz (-6dB), with sensitivity of 85.5dB and a nominal impedance of 8 ohms, falling to a minimum of 3.5 ohms at 6.8kHz. Monitor Audio recommends amplification of 15 to 60W into 8 ohms, or 30 to 120W into 4 ohms.
