Monitor Audio's Silver Series sits in the upper part of the company's hi-fi speaker line-up, above the Bronze Series and below the Gold and flagship Platinum Series. The Silver 50 8G is the compact standmount in the eighth-generation Silver range, a seven model family built to serve both two-channel listening and fully immersive multi-channel systems. It is a 2-way bookshelf design supplied as a matched pair, and this listing is the High Gloss Black finish.
Drive Units
Each cabinet carries a single 6-inch C-CAM mid-bass driver using the RST III cone profile, partnered with a 25mm C-CAM Gold Dome tweeter. For the 8G generation the RST III driver and motor system were re-engineered for greater transparency and control through the critical vocal range, with an updated cone geometry that increases rigidity and reduces colouration. A new progressive spider, an upgraded voice coil and an improved venting system look after linearity, airflow and power handling. The tweeter gains a vented design and revised internal enclosure geometry to cut distortion and improve airflow, plus an updated compression ring geometry and a new ring neodymium magnet for greater magnetic efficiency. The latest UD Waveguide II keeps performance stable and consistent across all listening levels.
Cabinet and Porting
Bass loading uses Monitor Audio's Silent Flow Port Technology. The port diameter has been increased to reduce turbulence significantly compared with previous ranges, and the flare geometry, inspired by the interlocking wing feathers of an owl, guides airflow smoothly through the port and minimises chuffing. The port is tuned to 52Hz, and in-room response reaches down to 43Hz at -6dB. Through-Bolt Technology braces the C-CAM drive units to the rear of the cabinet and tightens them to a specific torque, removing unwanted chassis resonances while strengthening overall cabinet rigidity. Rigid internal bracing and damping are used throughout the range to reduce panel vibration and improve transient response.
Crossover and Amplifier Matching
The crossover has been upgraded over the previous generation with carefully selected capacitors, inductors and resistors for more precise signal division and lower losses, giving tighter integration between the two drivers. There is a single handover point at 2.6kHz. Sensitivity is 86.5dB, nominal impedance is 8 Ohms and the minimum is 3.8 Ohms at 240Hz. Monitor Audio recommends 25 to 100W into 8 Ohms (50 to 200W into 4 Ohms); continuous power handling is 100W and maximum peak SPL is 110dB.
Finishes and Placement
The High Gloss Black finish is one of three offered on the Silver 50 8G; European Walnut and Satin White are also available. At 335mm tall, 185mm wide and 332mm deep, and 8.2kg each, the Silver 50 8G suits a dedicated stand or a solid shelf. It also works as the front pair of a home cinema system: the Silver AMS 8G is designed to sit on top of the Silver 50 for immersive height effects, with the Silver Centre 8G anchoring the front stage.
