Monitor Audio MASS Gen2 5.1 Home Cinema Package Midnight

The MASS Gen2 is Monitor Audio’s second-generation compact surround sound system, sitting at the entry point of their home cinema range. Designed in the UK, it replaces the original MASS system with a completely redesigned cabinet, new driver technology, and a DSP-equipped subwoofer — delivering a genuine 5.1 experience from speakers small enough to disappear into any room.

Satellite Speakers

Each of the five MASS Satellite speakers is a two-way design built around a 3½″ (89mm) MMP II (Metal Matrix Polymer) mid-bass driver and a ¾″ (19mm) soft dome tweeter. The MMP II cone is a development of Monitor Audio’s proprietary metal-matrix polymer technology, using a variable-thickness profile and internal ribbing to control break-up modes across the operating band. Frequency response extends from 105Hz up to 34kHz (−6dB), with a sensitivity of 80dB (1W at 1m) and a nominal impedance of 8 ohms (4.4 ohms minimum at 300Hz). Each satellite handles 30W RMS, rising to 70W when used with an amplifier crossover set at 150Hz.

Cabinet Construction

The satellite enclosure sandwiches a core MDF ring between two glass-fibre-reinforced ABS halves, creating a rigid, braced shell that minimises cabinet resonance. A custom-weave cloth finish wraps the exterior, and each speaker weighs just 1.12kg. A concealed cable termination sits within the end cap, feeding a pair of binding posts on the rear. An integrated stand-mount point accepts the optional MASS floor stand, and the optional MASM wall bracket provides on-wall mounting without visible fixings.

Subwoofer

The MASS Subwoofer pairs an 8″ (200mm) long-throw MMP II driver with 120W of Class D amplification in a sealed MDF cabinet. A built-in DSP processor offers three preset equalisation modes: Music delivers a natural bass curve extending to 30Hz; Movie provides a flat response down to 35Hz; and Impact adds a low-frequency boost for action soundtracks and gaming. Rear-panel controls include variable crossover frequency, volume, and phase, alongside stereo RCA line-level inputs and a 12V trigger input for automatic power-on.

System Performance

As a package, the five satellites and subwoofer are voiced to work together seamlessly. The satellites’ 98dB maximum SPL (pair) and the subwoofer’s 120W amplifier provide enough headroom for small-to-medium rooms, while the compact dimensions and unobtrusive cloth finish allow the system to blend into living spaces where larger speaker packages would dominate. Monitor Audio recommend partnering the satellites with an amplifier rated between 25W and 100W per channel.
