The Gold W12 sits at the pinnacle of Monitor Audio’s Gold Series 5G subwoofer offering, positioned above the entry-level Bronze and mid-range Silver W-12 models. Where the Silver relies on a sealed cabinet and 500 W amplification, the Gold W12 deploys a more sophisticated three-driver system with a 305 mm (12″) long-throw C-CAM driver supported by a pair of 200 mm Auxiliary Bass Radiators (ABR), powered by a 600 W Hypex Class D amplifier module. The result is deeper, more controlled bass extension from a compact cabinet.

Driver Technology

The 305 mm main driver uses Monitor Audio’s signature dished C-CAM (Ceramic-Coated Aluminium/Magnesium) cone, a material chosen for its combination of rigidity and low mass. The voice coil is a larger-than-typical 75 mm diameter unit, black anodised to improve heat dissipation, and the driver runs on a triple suspension system that maintains linearity at high excursion levels. Total linear driver excursion is 19 mm peak to peak, with a displacement of 1.6 litres. The two side-mounted 200 mm ABR drivers augment the main driver’s output, extending low-frequency reach without the need for a reflex port or larger cabinet volume.

Amplification & DSP

Power comes from a 600 W Hypex Class D amplifier module coupled with a switching power supply designed for instantaneous high-current delivery. Digital signal processing is handled by a 50 MIPS DSP core running 512 instructions per sample with 138 dB of dynamic range and 56-bit double precision processing. The ADCs and DACs operate at 24-bit/48 kHz resolution. All crossover and control functions are performed digitally, eliminating the tolerances associated with analogue filter components.

Room Correction & Control

Monitor Audio’s Automatic Position Correction (APC) system uses a supplied measurement microphone to analyse the room’s acoustic behaviour and automatically compensate for detrimental room modes. This allows the W12 to deliver optimised bass response regardless of placement constraints. Fine-tuning is accessible via the top-mounted rotary control dial or through Monitor Audio’s SubConnect desktop software connected via USB. The controller offers four fully configurable user presets per input — Flat, Music, Movie and Impact — with adjustable frequency, slope, trim and equaliser filters for each. A Night Mode reduces dynamic range for quieter listening sessions.

Connectivity

The rear panel provides comprehensive connection options: a balanced LFE input (XLR) for high-end AV processors, an unbalanced LFE input (RCA) for standard AV receivers, and stereo unbalanced inputs (RCA) for two-channel integration. Additional connectivity includes USB for SubConnect software and firmware updates, RS-232 for custom installation control, a 12 V DC trigger input, and an IR output.
