The Monitor Audio CS180 is a high-performance in-ceiling speaker from the Slim Series, designed for installations where ceiling cavity depth is restricted. With a mounting depth of just 99.4 mm, it fits into standard stud walls and shallow ceiling voids that would exclude conventional in-ceiling designs, whilst still delivering the full-range performance expected of an 8-inch driver.
Driver Technology
The CS180 employs a two-way configuration pairing an 8-inch MMP II (Metal Matrix Polymer) cone bass driver with a 1-inch C-CAM (Ceramic-Coated Aluminium/Magnesium) Gold Dome tweeter. The MMP II bass cone uses a polymer substrate coated with a metal layer, combining the lightness needed for transient response with the rigidity required for controlled, distortion-free bass reproduction. The C-CAM Gold Dome tweeter pivots on its mounting, allowing the high-frequency output to be aimed towards the primary listening position for improved imaging in off-axis installations.
Tuning & Performance
A three-position high-frequency level switch (+3 dB, 0 dB, −3 dB) allows the tweeter output to be trimmed to suit room acoustics and speaker placement. With a sensitivity of 90 dB (1W @ 1m) and a maximum SPL of 110.6 dBA, the CS180 can fill large rooms from a recommended amplifier power of 30–120 W into its 6-ohm nominal impedance. Frequency response extends from 48 Hz to 30 kHz.
Installation
The CS180 requires a 213 mm circular cut-out and secures to the ceiling with a three-position Tri-Grip dog fixing system. A magnetic, paintable grille snaps into place for a clean finish and is available in both round (251.7 mm diameter) and square (246.7 × 246.7 mm) formats. The chassis is constructed from mineral-filled ABS (RoHS compliant) and connects via gold-plated push-type speaker terminals. For new-build or pre-wire installations, the optional CB6 (Purple) pre-construction bracket simplifies first-fix mounting.
