The CP-IW460X is the most premium model in Monitor Audio's Controlled Performance in-wall range, a series designed to deliver audiophile-grade sound from within the wall cavity itself. Sitting at the top of the CP line-up — above the single-driver CP-IW260X and the two-way CP-WT380IDC — the CP-IW460X is a three-way, five-driver design built around an integrated sealed back-box, targeting high-performance home cinema and dedicated listening room installations where visible cabinetwork is not an option.
Driver Complement & Configuration
The CP-IW460X deploys its five drivers in a symmetrical B-M-T-M-B arrangement: two 6.5-inch C-CAM RST bass drivers flank two 4-inch C-CAM RST mid-range drivers, with a C-CAM Ribbon high-frequency transducer at the centre. The ribbon tweeter can be physically rotated to maintain correct dispersion whether the speaker is mounted in portrait or landscape orientation — a practical consideration for installations where the wall cavity dictates placement.
All four cone drivers use Monitor Audio's C-CAM (Ceramic-Coated Aluminium/Magnesium) material with RST (Rigid Surface Technology), a dimpled surface pattern that increases stiffness without adding mass. The bass drivers are mounted in die-cast alloy chassis for mechanical rigidity, while the mid-range drivers employ underhung voice coils.
Enclosure & Installation
Rather than relying on the wall cavity as a shared, uncontrolled airspace, the CP-IW460X incorporates a sealed cast polymer back-box. This enclosure provides rear sound isolation and a defined, damped air volume behind the drivers — the origin of the "Controlled Performance" name. The front baffle is die-cast aluminium, chosen for rigidity and consistent acoustic behaviour across the frequency range.
Mounting uses Monitor Audio's patented Tri-Grip fixing system, with ten dog-leg fasteners that clamp the speaker to the plasterboard from behind, offering three times the contact area of conventional toggle-style fixings. The required wall cut-out measures 880 × 230mm, with a mounting depth of 96mm. Trimless magnetic grilles sit flush with the wall surface and are paintable to match the surrounding décor.
Crossover & Performance
The high-end crossover network features low-loss inductors and audiophile-grade polypropylene capacitors. Crossover points are set at 500Hz (LF to MF, 12dB/octave) and 3kHz (MF to HF, 18dB/octave). Boundary compensation switching (on/off) and ±1dB level adjustments for mid-range and high-frequency output allow the installer to tune the speaker's response to the acoustic characteristics of the room and wall construction.
The CP-IW460X achieves a rated sensitivity of 89dB (1W at 1m) and a maximum SPL of 113.8dBA at 1m (installed, in-room), making it suitable for larger rooms and high-output home cinema duty. Frequency response extends from 50Hz to 60kHz (−6dB, sealed, in-room).
