The PM-12SE sits near the top of Marantz’s stereo amplifier range, positioned below the flagship MODEL 10 and alongside the PM-KI Ruby from which it draws much of its engineering DNA. Launched as a “Special Edition” refinement of the Japan-only PM-12, the SE variant benefits from more considered component selection and voicing by Marantz’s Japanese and European engineering teams. It is an analogue-only integrated amplifier — there is no built-in DAC. Marantz deliberately omitted digital circuitry to eliminate the electrical noise it introduces, keeping the signal path as clean as possible.
Amplification
The PM-12SE uses a fully discrete, dual-mono amplification architecture with a current-feedback topology. The output stage is built around Hypex Class D modules delivering 100W per channel into 8 ohms, doubling to 200W into 4 ohms. Separate power supplies feed the pre-amplifier and power amplifier sections independently: a toroidal transformer for the pre-amp stage, and a switch-mode power supply for the Hypex power amp modules. This separation ensures the sensitive pre-amp circuitry is isolated from the higher-current demands of the output stage.
Marantz’s proprietary HDAM (Hyper Dynamic Amplifier Module) technology is used throughout. The pre-amplifier stage employs HDAM-SA3 modules, while the HDAM-SA2 variant handles supporting duties including the dedicated headphone amplifier. These are discrete surface-mount circuits designed to replace conventional op-amps, offering wider bandwidth and faster slew rates.
Phono Stage
The built-in phono stage supports both moving magnet and moving coil cartridges, driven by a discrete Marantz Musical Premium Phono EQ circuit. MM sensitivity is rated at 2.3 mV with a 39 kΩ input impedance; MC sensitivity is 250 µV with a 100 Ω input impedance. This is a meaningful inclusion at this price point, removing the need for an external phono stage for vinyl playback.
Construction
The chassis is built around a copper-shielded system block and a double-layer bottom plate, both intended to suppress vibration and electromagnetic interference. Input terminals are nickel-plated copper, and the speaker binding posts are Marantz’s SPKT-100+ design using high-purity copper. A low-noise OLED display handles source and volume indication without introducing the interference associated with LCD or vacuum fluorescent displays. The linear volume control maintains channel balance across its range.
Connectivity
Six analogue line-level inputs are provided, all on gold-plated RCA connectors, plus the MM/MC phono input. Two sets of speaker terminals allow bi-wiring or driving a second pair of speakers. A power amp direct input bypasses the pre-amplifier stage entirely, useful when pairing with an external pre-amp or AV processor for home cinema integration. A headphone output with its own discrete HDAM-SA2 amplifier circuit is included on the front panel. System integration is handled via D-Bus and a pair of 3.5mm floating control bus jacks.
