The Marantz Model 50 is the flagship integrated amplifier in Marantz’s 50 series, sitting above the CD 50n network CD player as the centrepiece of a pure analogue stereo system. Succeeding the long-running PM6007, the Model 50 marks a significant step forward in Marantz’s approach to two-channel amplification, moving to a current feedback topology with custom HDAM SA3 modules — a technology previously reserved for Marantz’s higher-end models.
Amplifier Design
At the heart of the Model 50 is a Class A/B amplifier delivering 70 watts per channel into 8 ohms, rising to 100 watts into 4 ohms. The current feedback topology, paired with Marantz’s proprietary HDAM SA3 (Hyper Dynamic Amplifier Module) circuits, provides exceptional current delivery with total harmonic distortion of just 0.02% and a damping factor of 100. This architecture was specifically selected by the Marantz Sound Master for its ability to combine authority with musical nuance.
Power Supply
The Model 50 employs a toroidal power transformer — a relatively unusual choice for Marantz at this price point — paired with a linear drive power supply. A triple-layer bottom plate provides additional isolation from mechanical vibration, contributing to the amplifier’s low noise floor.
Inputs and Connectivity
As a purely analogue design, the Model 50 forgoes digital inputs entirely. It offers six analogue inputs: four line-level connections (CD, Tuner, Line, Recorder), a dedicated moving magnet phono stage, and a power amplifier direct input for use with an external preamplifier. The built-in MM phono stage uses a new circuit design without distortion-inducing coupling capacitors, with RIAA deviation of ±0.5 dB across 20 Hz to 20 kHz.
Outputs and Flexibility
The Model 50 features a stereo preamplifier output and a dedicated subwoofer output (220 mV), allowing it to serve as the hub of a more complex system. Marantz’s SPKT-1+ speaker terminals support A/B speaker switching, enabling two pairs of loudspeakers to be connected simultaneously. A front-panel headphone output is also included.
Design and Build
The Model 50 continues Marantz’s signature aesthetic with symmetrical front-panel layout, a low-noise OLED display, and tactile rotary controls. The amplifier weighs 14.2 kg and measures 442 × 431 × 130 mm (W×D×H). It is available in Black and Silver Gold finishes.
