The Marantz CD 60 sits at the heart of the brand’s current hi-fi separates range, slotting beneath the networked CD 50n and above the outgoing CD6007 it replaces. Where the CD 50n adds HEOS streaming and network connectivity, the CD 60 concentrates purely on disc and USB playback, channelling its engineering budget into analogue output quality and a refined listening experience.
HDAM Analogue Output Stage
The CD 60 uses Marantz’s proprietary Hyper Dynamic Amplifier Module (HDAM) circuit in the analogue output stage. This generation of HDAM places components symmetrically on the audio board with a more direct signal path than its predecessor, improving the sound stage. Marantz’s Sound Master personally tuned the CD 60 through careful component selection, prioritising musicality over raw specification maximisation.
Digital-to-Analogue Conversion
At the core of the CD 60 is an ESS ES9016K2M DAC with two user-selectable filter modes. For CD playback, the converter delivers a signal-to-noise ratio of 110 dB, dynamic range of 100 dB (16-bit) or 110 dB (24-bit), and total harmonic distortion of just 0.0010% at 24-bit resolution. The analogue output level is 2.15 V RMS in stereo.
Hi-Res USB Playback
A front-panel USB Type A input accepts storage devices containing MP3, WMA, AAC, WAV, FLAC, ALAC, and AIFF files at resolutions up to 192 kHz/24-bit, as well as native DSD playback up to 5.6 MHz. The frequency response extends to 50 kHz (−3 dB) when playing back high-resolution 192 kHz material.
Headphone Amplifier
The CD 60 integrates an HDAM-SA2 headphone amplifier circuit with a front-panel 6.35 mm output. Three gain settings (low, medium, and high) allow the headphone output to be matched to a wide range of headphone impedances, delivering 28 mW into 32 Ω. The headphone amplifier can be switched off when not in use to eliminate any potential interference with the main analogue outputs.
Connectivity
Fixed gold-plated RCA analogue outputs feed a stereo amplifier or integrated amplifier. Digital audio is available via both coaxial (0.5 Vp-p at 75 Ω) and optical outputs, enabling connection to an external DAC or digital recording device. A remote control bus terminal with external/internal selection allows integration into a multi-component Marantz system.
Construction
The CD 60 features a brushed aluminium front panel with Marantz’s signature curved and textured side panels. The chassis measures 442 × 129 × 396 mm and weighs 7.5 kg. Power consumption is 38 W during operation, dropping to 0.3 W in standby.
