Justin Hurwitz - La La Land (OST) [Black] (LP) Vinyl

La La Land is the soundtrack album to Damien Chazelle's musical, with music by Justin Hurwitz and lyrics by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. Hurwitz had scored Chazelle's two previous films, and for La La Land he wrote both the original songs and the instrumental score. The record is therefore a single composer's work rather than a compilation of existing recordings, moving between cast vocal numbers and instrumental score cues.

The Album

Fourteen tracks run across two sides, seven per side. Side one opens with the ensemble number "Another Day of Sun" performed by the La La Land Cast, followed by "Someone in the Crowd" with Emma Stone, Callie Hernandez, Sonoya Mizuno and Jessica Rothe. Hurwitz's own instrumental pieces "Mia & Sebastian's Theme", "Herman's Habit" and "Planetarium" sit alongside "A Lovely Night" with Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, and the first of the album's three readings of "City of Stars", sung by Gosling.

Side two carries "Summer Montage / Madeline", the Gosling and Stone duet of "City of Stars", John Legend's "Start a Fire", "Engagement Party", Emma Stone's "Audition (The Fools Who Dream)", "Epilogue / The End" and a closing hummed reprise of "City of Stars". "Start a Fire" is the one track whose words and music fall outside the Hurwitz, Pasek and Paul partnership: it is credited to John Stephens, Justin Hurwitz, Marius de Vries and Angélique Cinélu.

A single 12 inch black vinyl LP on Interscope Records, catalogue number B0025619-01. The soundtrack album was produced by Justin Hurwitz, Marius de Vries and Steven Gizicki, mixed and engineered by Nicholai Baxter, and mastered for the soundtrack by Eric Boulanger at The Bakery. Recording took place at Berry Drive Studios, Conway Studios and Igloo Music. The record is supplied in a printed inner sleeve carrying the full credits for every track.
