At San Quentin is Johnny Cash's live album, recorded on 24 February 1969 in front of an audience of inmates at San Quentin State Prison in California and first released in June that year. This 180 gram vinyl edition reissues the original Columbia album on a single LP under the Columbia and Legacy imprints, complete with a download card.
The recording
The performance was captured during the making of the Granada Television programme Johnny Cash At San Quentin and was produced by Bob Johnston. The set pairs Cash standards such as I Walk The Line and Folsom Prison Blues with San Quentin, written for and delivered directly to the prison audience, and the crowd favourite A Boy Named Sue.
Recognition
A Boy Named Sue, taken from these sessions, won the Grammy Award for Best Male Country Vocal Performance, and the album was nominated for Album of the Year.
