Herbie Hancock - Maiden Voyage [180g, Blue] (LP) Vinyl

Maiden Voyage is Herbie Hancock's fifth album as a leader for Blue Note Records, recorded on 17 March 1965 at Rudy Van Gelder's studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey and produced by Alfred Lion. Conceived as a concept album evoking the sea and an oceanic atmosphere, it is widely regarded as one of the defining modal jazz recordings of the 1960s.

The Session

Hancock leads a quintet drawn largely from the Miles Davis group of the period: Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, George Coleman on tenor saxophone, Ron Carter on bass and Tony Williams on drums. The spacious interplay between these musicians gives the record its exploratory, unhurried character.

The Music

The album collects five Hancock originals. Three of them, the title track, The Eye of the Hurricane and Dolphin Dance, went on to become jazz standards. Reid Miles designed the celebrated cover and Rudy Van Gelder engineered the session.
