Grado SR80X Prestige Headphones

The SR80x sits at the heart of Grado's Prestige X series — a five-model range of open-back headphones that spans from the entry-level SR60x to the SR325x at the top. As the second model from the bottom, the SR80x builds on the SR60x's foundations with a fourth-generation dynamic driver and a four-conductor cable, offering a meaningful step up in engineering refinement at a modest price premium. The Prestige series represents Grado's longest-running headphone lineage, with the first SR80 built in 1991 — the current X generation brings updated driver technology and revised ergonomics while retaining the open-air on-ear form factor the range is known for.

Driver Technology

Each SR80x uses Grado's fourth-generation dynamic driver, developed specifically for the Prestige X series. Refinements to the magnetic circuit, voice coil mass, and diaphragm geometry improve efficiency compared to the outgoing generation while preserving the harmonic character and mid-range clarity that the Prestige series has always been associated with. Careful control of resonance between the driver and its housing reduces transient distortion and keeps musical detail intact. Drivers are matched to within 0.1 dB between channels, ensuring precise stereo imaging.

Construction & Comfort

The SR80x uses an open-air acoustic design: the rear of each driver is open to the environment, which allows the diaphragm to move more freely and contributes to the headphone's characteristically wide, natural soundstage. The trade-off is that sound leaks both in and out, making the SR80x unsuitable for quiet offices or public transport but well-suited to home listening where isolation is not a priority. The revised padded headband introduced in the X generation improves comfort during extended sessions. The on-ear ear pads are replaceable.
