The Goldring Ethos SE is the flagship moving coil cartridge in the Goldring range, representing the pinnacle of the company's handcrafted generator technology. Building on the original Ethos, the SE variant introduces a series of targeted engineering refinements — new pure silver coil windings, revised pole-shoe geometry, and a vital line-contact stylus profile — that collectively reduce effective tip mass and extend tracking ability at the upper limits of programme material.
Silver Coil Windings and Generator Architecture
At the heart of the Ethos SE is the company's proprietary GOL-1 generator, still handmade by Goldring. In the SE, the coils are wound with Ag 9999 pure silver wire, chosen for its very low internal resistance and lower mass. Fewer windings are required to achieve the same output, which reduces the effective tip mass contribution of the coil assembly — translating into improved tracking and greater transient response.
Low-Mass Cross-Armature
Rather than the conventional square-profile armature, the Ethos SE uses a cross-shaped armature core made from high-permeability Swedish iron. The reduced cross-section lowers the mass of the moving assembly, which the manufacturer states directly improves channel separation and produces a more realistic soundstage. New low-reluctance pole-shoes are fitted alongside the revised armature to ensure a smooth and extended frequency response through an exclusive Goldring process.
Vital Line-Contact Stylus
The stylus is a nude vital-shank design with a polyhedral, line-contact diamond profile. The narrow, low tip-mass geometry is chosen to enhance high-frequency response and minimise distortion and colouration in the groove. Stylus radius is 35 x 8 µm, with an equivalent tip mass of 0.34 mg and trackability of 90 µm at 315 Hz. Recommended playing weight is 1.5–2.0 g with a nominal setting of 1.75 g.
Body Construction
The GOL-1 generator is housed in a precision-milled 6082-T6 aircraft-grade aluminium body shell. This alloy was selected for its low density and superior rigidity, which minimise resonances that could colour the signal retrieved from the groove.
