Focal Utopia (2022) - Black & Chrome

The Focal Utopia (2022) sits at the very top of Focal's open-back headphone range, the flagship reference model positioned above the Clear MG and Stellia. This revised edition retains the original Utopia's patented full-range Beryllium driver while introducing a reworked voice coil and a refined black and chrome aesthetic, and like every Utopia it is handcrafted at Focal's facilities in Saint-Etienne, France.

Pure Beryllium 'M' Dome Driver

The Utopia is built around a 40mm fully open-back, full-range driver with an 'M'-shaped dome made from pure Beryllium. Beryllium is prized for its exceptional stiffness-to-weight ratio, allowing the diaphragm to behave as a rigid piston across an extraordinarily wide bandwidth. The driver operates without any active or passive correction, extending from 5Hz to beyond 23kHz, and reproduces fine detail and dynamic contrast with the immediacy associated with Focal's reference loudspeakers.

Reworked Voice Coil

For the 2022 revision, Focal's engineers developed a new copper and aluminium voice coil. The composite construction balances electrical conductivity against mass, contributing to a revised sound signature with improved control while supporting the long-term reliability of the driver assembly.

Open-Back Architecture

A fully open-back design with distinctive honeycomb grilles removes the pressure build-up that can colour the sound of closed headphones, producing a spacious and natural soundstage. The open construction is intended for critical home listening rather than isolation or portable use.

Materials and Comfort

The Utopia is finished in genuine leather, aluminium and forged recycled carbon, with black chrome rings framing the honeycomb grilles. The yoke is made from recycled forged carbon, chosen for its light weight and even distribution of the headphone's mass across the head. Memory foam ear pads and a genuine leather headband provide comfort over extended listening sessions.

Cables and Accessories

The headphones are supplied with a 1.5m 3.5mm jack cable and a 3m 4-pin XLR balanced cable, both terminated with Lemo connectors at the earcups, along with a 3.5mm to 6.35mm jack adapter. A thermoformed carrying case and a black leatherette storage cabinet are included for transport and storage.
