The FiiO SP5 is FiiO's flagship active desktop speaker system, following the success of the SP3 and designed for listeners who demand a spacious soundstage, audiophile-grade sound quality, and versatile connectivity in a compact form factor. Built from a single 10kg aluminium ingot through a 650-degree liquid die-casting process, the SP5 combines professional-grade engineering with the practicality of a fully self-contained active system.
Drivers and Acoustic Design
Each SP5 speaker uses a two-way active configuration with a 5.25-inch composite fibre woofer and a 1-inch composite silk soft-dome tweeter. The woofer cone is constructed from a similar composite fibre material to that used in the Bowers and Wilkins 700 series, providing exceptional rigidity and control for deep, powerful bass that remains tight and responsive during dynamic passages. The SP5 tweeter incorporates a precisely engineered waveguide to optimise near-field listening, along with magnetic fluid cooling and damping technology for extended, resolving treble that avoids harshness.
The cabinet dimensions are carefully calculated to prevent standing waves, with drivers angled for precise phase alignment. The distinctive diffuser-shaped horizontal ribbing on the cabinet surface acts as structural reinforcement, resisting vibration and contributing to the SP5's unusually flat frequency response and soundstage imaging. A rear-firing reflex port extends low-frequency response, with two selectable bass extension settings (50Hz and 60Hz) available alongside two-stage treble adjustment of -2dB, 0dB, or +2dB.
Amplification and Power
Each SP5 speaker contains an independent Texas Instruments TPA3116D2 Class D stereo digital amplifier, separately driving the woofer and tweeter channels. Total system output is 160W across four independent channels: 60W per channel for the two woofers and 20W per channel for the two tweeters. Each speaker is powered by FiiO's own 120W switching power supply, providing each unit with independent, stable power to avoid interference between the main and secondary speakers.
Power conditioning is handled by a multi-stage rectification and filtering architecture that independently powers the output stage, minimising interference. A transformer resonance system converts the single power source into a dual-symmetrical supply for the critical front-end circuitry. The SP5 also features a smart power-saving mode with automatic standby and wake-up.
DAC and Volume Control
Two ES9068AS DAC chips handle the left and right channels respectively, providing high-resolution digital-to-analogue conversion. Volume is managed by the NJW1195A electronic volume control ā a resistor-ladder potentiometer from the world of high-end headphone amplifiers ā with an output noise floor of just -118dBV typical and a volume range of +31.5dB to -95dB adjustable in 0.5dB steps. The result is a measured signal-to-noise ratio of 100dB.
Connectivity and Wireless
The SP5 main speaker provides XLR balanced, RCA, 3.5mm auxiliary, and USB audio inputs alongside Bluetooth 5.1. The XLR input supports independent volume control and is designed for use with professional audio equipment. USB audio supports playback up to 96kHz/24-bit. The secondary speaker connects to the main unit via an included RJ45 cable.
Wireless connectivity is handled by a Qualcomm QCC5125 Bluetooth chip supporting a full suite of codecs: SBC, AAC, aptX, aptX LL, aptX HD, LDAC, and aptX Adaptive, with a maximum transmission rate of 990kbps for high-resolution wireless playback. Colour-coded LED indicators show the active input and Bluetooth codec at a glance.
FiiO Control App and PEQ
The SP5 is compatible with the FiiO Control app, which provides management of input source, Bluetooth codec, RGB lighting, and power-saving settings over a Bluetooth connection. A 10-band parametric equaliser powered by FiiO's own algorithms allows precise frequency response adjustment. A web-based PEQ interface is also supported, to be enabled via an OTA firmware update. A physical remote control is included in the box.
