The FiiO QX13 represents the company's most ambitious foray into the portable DAC and headphone amplifier space. Drawing on FiiO's extensive experience developing both portable and desktop audio equipment, the QX13 marks a decisive step beyond the conventional dongle DAC, combining desktop-grade components with a genuinely portable form factor.
Desktop-Grade DAC Architecture
At the heart of the QX13 is the ESS SABRE PRO ES9027SPRO, a flagship ESS chip featuring a fully differential audio architecture with eight channels operating in parallel. This single-chip solution is paired with a pair of ultra-low-noise ES9312 voltage regulators to ensure precise output matching on every audio channel. The digital front end uses an XMOS 16-core XU316 USB interface with dual ultra-low phase noise femtosecond crystal oscillators, delivering support for PCM audio up to 32-bit/768kHz and native DSD512. Full MQA decoding is also on board.
Powerful Amplification
Amplification is handled by six Texas Instruments op-amps in a bespoke circuit: four INA1620 precision-integrated chips reduce inter-channel crosstalk to negligible levels, while two OPA1692 chips ensure excellent dynamics under varying load conditions. The result is a maximum output of up to 990mW via the balanced 4.4mm Pentaconn output in Desktop Mode with dual USB-C power feeds connected. Without Desktop Mode, balanced output remains a formidable 605mW. A separate 3.5mm single-ended output is also provided for standard headphone connections. A desktop-mode slide switch and dual colour-coded USB-C ports make switching between portable and desktop use simple and clear.
Build and Display
The QX13 is available in two distinct versions: the Black variant uses a 21-layer real carbon fibre body, which is lighter than aluminium alloy whilst retaining superior strength and offering natural electromagnetic and thermal insulation properties. Across both variants, the front face features a large 1.99-inch full-colour display protected by Corning third-generation scratch-resistant glass, with four selectable UI themes and a rotation option. Three physical buttons sit below the screen, with the centre button navigating menus and the flanking buttons adjusting volume. Internal construction uses a multi-layer shielding approach with the digital and analogue boards separated and insulated by electromagnetic shielding sheets, and thermally conductive silicone pads to channel heat away from critical components.
Flexibility and Features
A ten-band parametric equaliser accessible via the FiiO Control app or the onboard menu provides extensive tuning flexibility, with eight built-in presets and space for ten custom profiles. Digital filter selection, gain modes, balance control, and a volume-step selector offering either 60 or 120 volume steps give the QX13 a depth of control unusual for a portable device. UAC 1.0 compatibility mode and SPDIF output via the 3.5mm socket (adapter required, sold separately) round out the connectivity options. The QX13 ships with a magnetic protective leather case compatible with FiiO's EStick power bank, a braided USB-C cable, USB-C silicon port covers, a screen protector, and a comprehensive multilingual user guide.
