ES9038PRO — The Full Desktop DAC Chip
At the heart of the M15S is a single, uncompromised ES9038PRO from ESS Technology. Unlike some portable players that use cut-down or mobile variants, the M15S uses the complete chip with all eight D/A converters active — four per channel in a fully differential configuration. Paired with two OPA926 amplifier modules, two custom NDK femtosecond crystal oscillators, and a fourth-generation FPGA with phase-locked loop technology, the result is exceptionally low noise and distortion across all output modes.
Serious Output Power
The balanced 4.4mm Pentaconn output delivers up to 1,200 mW per channel at 32 ohms under USB power — sufficient to drive even demanding full-size planar and dynamic headphones. The 3.5mm single-ended output is equally capable, offering up to 535 mW at 16 ohms. Five gain levels and 120-step volume adjustment give precise control for sensitive in-ear monitors and power-hungry over-ear headphones alike.
Six Operating Modes
The M15S operates in six distinct modes: Pure Music, Android, AirPlay, Roon Ready, USB DAC, and Bluetooth Receiver. Pure Music mode bypasses unnecessary background processes for the cleanest possible audio signal path. Roon Ready certification means it integrates seamlessly into existing Roon setups without additional configuration. As a USB DAC, it accepts DSD512 input from a connected computer.
Android 10 and Streaming Services
Running Android 10 on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 processor with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB internal storage, the M15S runs streaming services natively. It supports Tidal, Qobuz, Spotify, and other Android-compatible music apps alongside its own FiiO Music app for local playback. Dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz) and Bluetooth 5.0 with LDAC, aptX HD, aptX Adaptive, and AAC support ensure high-resolution wireless streaming and connectivity.
Lossless Format Support
Local playback supports PCM audio up to 384 kHz at 32 bits, native DSD up to DSD256, and MQA with full 8x unfolding. A 10-band parametric equaliser with eight presets provides further sound shaping options.
Desktop Mode and Battery Management
Connecting the M15S to a desk setup is straightforward via the included DK3S heat dissipation dock. In desktop mode, the player can operate while connected to mains power with an option that neither charges nor discharges the battery — extending battery longevity for users who primarily use it at a desk. Portable battery life is rated at approximately 10.5 hours from the 3.5mm output.
