The FiiO LX-4.4M is a compact balanced audio adapter designed to bridge the gap between two established connector standards. Much traditional high-end desktop audio equipment, including headphone amplifiers and DAC/amp units, provides a 4-pin XLR balanced output for headphones and balanced cables. A growing number of newer audiophile devices, digital audio players, and portable amplifiers instead use the 4.4mm Pentaconn balanced connector. The LX-4.4M allows users to connect 4.4mm-terminated cables directly to equipment that has a 4-pin XLR socket, without the need to re-terminate cables or purchase additional adaptors.
Construction
The LX-4.4M is built with a metal shell that provides rigidity and a premium feel. Internal wiring is insulated for reliable signal transfer. The XLR connector uses gold-plated pins, which resist oxidation and ensure consistent contact quality over time. The adapter is passive and introduces no active circuitry, preserving the balanced signal path from source to headphone cable.
Connectivity
The adapter accepts a 4-pin XLR female socket (the input side, connecting to the amplifier or DAC output) and presents a 4.4mm Pentaconn male plug (the output side, connecting to a 4.4mm-terminated cable). The XLR pin assignment follows the standard audiophile convention: pin 1 = L+, pin 2 = L-, pin 3 = R+, pin 4 = R-. This allows the full balanced signal to pass through with correct polarity.
