The FiiO KA17 sits at the top of FiiO's KA series of USB dongle DAC/amplifiers, positioned above the KA13 and KA15 as the flagship model in the range. Where entry-level dongles prioritise portability over performance, the KA17 has been engineered to bring desktop-grade audio quality to a form factor that fits in a trouser pocket, drawing on circuit architectures originally developed for FiiO's higher-end digital audio players.
Dual Flagship DAC Architecture
At the heart of the KA17 are two ESS ES9069Q DAC chips, each handling a separate stereo channel. The ES9069Q uses ESS's fourth-generation 32-bit HyperStream technology, delivering lower noise, lower power consumption, and a cleaner audio background than earlier ES9068Q-based designs. The dual-DAC configuration underpins a four-way fully balanced signal path, with each channel processed entirely independently from digital input through to headphone output.
THX AAA 78+ Headphone Amplification
Headphone amplification is handled by four THX AAA 78+ amplifier stages operating in a fully balanced configuration, with eight op-amps working in parallel. The THX AAA (Achromatic Audio Amplifier) architecture is a feed-forward error correction topology designed to dramatically reduce distortion without the trade-offs associated with negative feedback. This arrangement gives the KA17 both the low noise floor and high current delivery needed to drive demanding headphones.
Desktop Mode and Power Output
A dedicated Desktop Mode switch on the side of the KA17 switches the amplifier circuitry into a higher-power parallel configuration. With an external 5V power supply connected to the orange USB-C port and Desktop Mode active, the KA17 delivers up to 320mW per channel into 16 ohms and 270mW per channel into 32 ohms from the 3.5mm single-ended output. The 4.4mm balanced output provides 460mW into 16 ohms and 650mW into 32 ohms under the same conditions, placing the KA17's output in the same territory as some desktop amplifiers.
USB Processing and Connectivity
Digital input is handled by the XMOS XU316, a 16-core USB audio controller that supports PCM audio up to 768kHz/32-bit and native DSD up to DSD512. The 3.5mm headphone jack doubles as a coaxial S/PDIF output, allowing the KA17 to feed an external DAC with a digital signal up to 96kHz/24-bit. Two USB Type-C ports are fitted: the standard data/power port for connecting to a phone, tablet, or computer, and the orange supplementary port for an external power supply when Desktop Mode is in use.
Interface and Features
A 0.91-inch OLED dot-matrix display shows transfer format, sampling rate, volume level, gain setting, and USB mode at a glance. Physical volume buttons handle gain and volume adjustment, with three configurable button modes to suit different usage habits. The KA17 also supports a 10-band parametric EQ, adjustable either through the FiiO Control app on Android or via FiiO's web-based PEQ tool. UAC1.0 driver-free mode is available for straightforward plug-and-play use without installing drivers. Each KA17 is supplied with a matching leatherette protective case.
